Sports

Welcome to the home of the Malamutes! Newhalen students are actively involved in sports. We play basketball, volleyball, and we also have some athletes that wrestle. NYO is also a popular sport here.

Recently, our boys basketball team, coached by Bob Rychnousky took first at the Regional Tournament which allowed them to advance to the State Competition. They played three very tough games to earn the championship trophy. At the State Competition, they placed fourth. Zach Armstrong and Eric Wassillie were named to the all-tourney team. Zack Armstrong also received honorable mention for the All State Team.

The girls basketball team placed third at the Regional Tournament by losing to the future state champions, the Sand Point Eagles, in an exiting four point game! The girls are coached by Rick Breske and hope to go to state next year. SEE PICTURES

Newhalen is the only LPSD school large enough to field an all-women Volleyball team. In its second year , it did not place at the district tournament but competed well against male dominated co-ed teams.

Fourteen wrestlers started the season, two of which were girls. By the send of the season the team was down to five members. Of those five, one 160 pounder made it to the state tournament in Fairbanks. Zack Armstrong lost all of his three matches, eliminated in a close, 11-10 match against Hans Alexi of Bethel. Our wrestlers worked really hard and we are all proud of them!

LPSD's NYO Team was made up of 15 kids 5 of which were from Newhalen School. Our team consisted of Chasity Anelon, Nena Anelon, Stephanie Trefon, Eric Wassillie, and Ray Wassillie. Nena Anelon placed 5th in the kneel jump. Eric Wassillie placed 3rd in the Alaskan High Kick and Ray Wassillie placed 5th in the scissor broad jump.

Newhalen School is one of the 15 which are a part of The Lake and Peninsula School District. The district office is located in King Salmon, approximately halfway between Port Alsworth, the most northern school and Ivanof Bay, the one farthest south. North of King Salmon are Dena'ina school at Pedro Bay, Nondalton, Kokhanok, Igiguig, Levelock and Port Alsworth. South of King Salmon are Egegik, Pilot Point, Meshik School at Port Heiden, Chignik Lake, Chignik Lagoon, Chignik Bay, Perryville and Ivanof Bay.

Our school district is unique in that our smallest schools have 1 teacher and 10 students, while Newhalen is the largest with 90 students and 7 teachers. In spite of our small size, we have tall standards, with every graduate required to earn 22 units, including 4 each of Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts.

Twice yearly all the secondary students in the north and the south come together for three days of what we call an Academic/Athletic Meet. This is a great opportunity to meet and interact with other district schools , learn new things and have a lot of fun.

The mission of The Lake and Peninsula School District is to develop self-directed problem solvers who are excited about learning, technologically literate, and secure in their heritage.
