Text Box: The Unalaska Advertiser

I seem to be in trouble over the blogs folks.

The blogs are causing some people at city hall grief

Note: The Mayor did not ask me to shut this site down.

Note: The City Manager did not ask me to shut this site down.

Do you want the blogs to continue?

The blog site was started by the request of many people in town.  People that wanted answers to questions and were afraid to ask because of retaliation.

Due to the overwhelming response on this from people in town and former residents it may take a while to get your comments posted. ( I do have a real job to do)

Text Box: Response to “Death of the Blogs”
Maybe no one asked you specifically to shut down the blog site, but they obviously tried to interfere in some way.  It is inexcusable that certain officials think they can suppress our basic constitutional rights, and impact a small business owner’s freedoms.  As registered voters we can make a change by voting in future elections, but the other ones, not sure what we can do about them.  Maybe send their resumes to Fidel? 11/05/06

Power to the People, smash the state, er, city. The blog is great for hearing what people really feel, and, if you can't take it, don't read it. It is not ugly to face the truth, problem seems to be folks geting their feelings hurt becasue they do no believe in what they are doing. Well, guess what, what comes around goes around, and if you aren't honest, forthright and true, next life is headed towards the hungry ghost or animal realm. None of us live in perfection, but we all know in our hearts what is Right Intention--let it always lead your life and keep the dialog flowing, it is such a brisk breeze off the Bering that sinlently slaps out cheeks to wakes us up to who we are, why we are here and the intense deeper interconnectedness that is ultimately available. Thank you, Veda, and Namaste to all. 11/05/06

I hate to see you get put in a position where you have to choose whether to keep this part of the site up or not. I also do not wish to see you in any hot water because of the site.
It is too bad that we have to be concerned with whether someone is offended by the opinions of some of the tax paying members of our community. I feel that this is a good place for people to voice their opinions anonymously. I enjoy reading some of the things people have to say here. Some of the opinions are right on where others are really out in left field. It is nice to know where some of the people around us stand on some of the issues that affect us today. It is also interesting to see some information here that has not been forthcoming from other sources.
Anyway, You don't need to post this. I just wanted to let you know that I support whatever decision you end up making. 11/04/06

Freedom of speech is the given right of United States citizens.  If there are people who want it shut down then maybe they should be living elsewhere.  We, as Americans fought for this right, and you should not shut something down that seems to be an expression of how people feel about things.  I also know that some people live and think that they have the right to control everything that goes on in a town or community.  Be proud of the stand that you take, as a newspaper editor and publisher, and as a citizen who lives in a democracy.   I have never written to you before however I do know that everyone has a right to express their thoughts, and you Veda are brave enough, as our forefathers who fought for our freedoms, to let people have the freedom to read what others think. If some people do not like the “Blog” pages they should choose not to read them.  I am glad to live in a country where people can say what they want.  My ancestors fought in that Revolutionary War that brought us our freedoms and I want you to know that your Net Paper is great! 11/04/06

Bloggers of Unalaska unite! What better vindication of this site than
pressure from The Powers That Be to shut it down. As others have pointed
out, it would appear that a sensitive nerve has been touched--good! Keep it
up! Thank you Veda. 11/04/06

Keep it open Veda!  If this blog shuts down, it will be easy enough to open another one that won't be associated with a business, and could be made Anonymous as to who the blog master is.  So at this point who ever has a problem with the blog is just going to have to learn to live with it;
either by getting a tough skin or choosing to not log on.
The influence of blogging is overall a very positive force in the media.

This notion of self-publishing, which is what Blogger and blogging are really about, is the next big wave of human communication. The last big wave was Web activity. Before that one it was e-mail. Instant messaging was
an extension of e-mail.

Keep the Blog. I find it very amusing. It is unfortunate though that people find it necessary to express their discontent on a blog. They should feel free to go to the council meetings and express their discontent there without reprisal. Maybe some people like to express their discontent without having to take the time and explain themselves in person. Whatever the reason, that is their right and it's nice to have a place to do it. I you don't like the way the city is being ran, go to the council meetings and express yourselves. What are they going to do? Oh yea, take away your blog. Who let them get this far where they think they have the power to stop the freedom of speech? Everyone who is concerned about this action needs to go to the next council meeting, sign up to be heard, demand an explanation and punishment for those who tried to take away our freedom. 11/03/06

Please, Veda, don't shut down the blog.  Please leave it as it is.  If people are offended by it then they should avert their eyes when they log on to the site!  Not everyone is as brave and as eloquent as Jeff Hancock.  I am extremely interested in what the silent majority in this town has to say and there are many people who do not wish to put their names out there.  I think they are either shy, or they fear reprisals.  Personally, I am sick of seeing and hearing about the same old people who won't shut up and don't mind putting their names out there.  Bully for you!
There is a forum via our weekly newspaper for people to comment on things amd identify themselves.  Let's keep the blog for the other people who are not so self-promoting.    I find that City Hall putting pressure on Veda and her blog just about the most frightening and pompous thing I have ever heard of in this town and I moved here in August of 1975.  For you sensitive people who are "bothered"by this stimulating, free-wheeling, free-thinking blog - resign or, simply enough, don't log on to the site.  Duh!!!
For the record, I think our Mayor is one of the best we've ever had.  In my opinion, she is not arrogant - she's very approachable and she promotes our town every chance she gets.  Lets keep her and get rid of the people who are so worried about concerned citizens having their say.  What are they worried about?  Whats next - a zillion spotlights all over town like the people in Dillingham have to deal with?  Grow up!  I am so angered by the thought that a few insecure people think they can shut down an ordinary blog that is obviously used  by such a large group of people.  How dare you!!!  Maybe it's time to move to the house in Portland and leave us peasants alone.  Thank you for this forum to vent and put out my point of view.  I don't want to add my name because Imay be applying for a job and my child is up for a scholarship this year. Think about it 11/03/06

Bin Blogin...  This is a truly amazing site.  We all need to thank Veda for her foresight and congrats on getting a business up and running in Dutch.  And by the way she pays taxes too.  So whoever at the City is trying to put the squeeze on you--Back off!!!  And to the whiny City Council member who just wants to be happy, why don't you do your job and support freedom of speech in Unalaska.  Didn't you take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America?  So your upset.  And Mr. Moses doesn't like it?

But our country is based on the principles of democracy and freedom.  This is why we elect, and un-elect City Council members.  Peoples opinions are not "facts".  No one on this site thinks everything they read here is "fact".  Its called discussion.  Plus you too have a choice.  If you don't want to participate then stop clicking on the blog!   On another note if there is truly an effort to stop the blog coming from Official City of Unalaska Representatives, then a civil rights attorney might be in order.  The City needs to wake up.  We the people may not be as dumb as we look.  11/03/06

As a former resident, it is with great interest that I read the controversy regarding the Blog.  As previous folks have stated this is certainly an issue of freedom of speech. In an age when everyone is busy the blog is a
modern form of the Town Hall meeting. Unlike a council meeting, in a blog no person or group controls the agenda. If someone writes something that isn't true or is misleading it will be shot down by those who read the blog.
Apparently your blog is read far and wide-which means that it will have a varied readership that will serve to make it a more "self policing" arena.
Just go back and look at some of the responses to previous posts to see how opinions are discussed, analyzed, discarded or accepted.

The issues of individuals questioning the actions and motives of public servants may be a bit uncomfortable for those at City Hall but it is critical to the functioning of a democracy. Unfortunately, an "us versus
them" mentality and a need to control who discusses issues (illistrated by the failed attempt to limit City employees from talking with elected officials) permeates City Hall. It is your tax money that is paying for every action that the City takes. You have every right to question those who are making those decisions.

Please do not cave in to pressures to shut down the blog. You are NOT responsible for the opinions expressed in the BLOG-you are merely providing a forum for those opinions. If individuals don't like this forum then I would suggest that they not log on. 11/03/06

I think what the city is trying to do is a crime.  Free speech.  This is one of the things that this country stands for.  This is not surprising to me that our City Manager is trying to keep the people of Unalaska quiet.  The City of Unalaska needs to realize that the people of this city will not stand for their scare tactics.  They conduct the same tactics with the City employees.  I think the citizens of Unalaska need to show the powers that be that we won't stand for it.  It's time we stand up and show we won't stand by and let them take our freedom of free speech away.  I am begging the citizens to talk to every City council member and let them know how we feel.  Start showing up at City council meetings.  If we let them win this they will just start taking all of our rights away. 11/03/06

How else can I follow the gossip except the blog and the Fisherman.

I  too agree with what Jeff wrote.   I voted for Carl in the last election but will not vote for him again on November 7th.    By running a write in campaign Carl will be splitting the Democratic vote and helping to elect a Republican.  It's still not too late to bow out gracefully Carl.  You lost the coin toss fair and square. 11/03/06

It doesn’t surprise me that someone had contacted Veda about the blog and the problems it may be causing those at City Hall. She is only the medium for the common peasants. It would not be fair for her to get grief over this, as she is only providing a service for the voices.
If it were someone at City Hall or City Council that is finding a problem with the postings on the blog, then maybe it would be better for them to address the issues instead of taking their grief to the Webmaster.
This incident is just 1 more example of the underhandedness and unethical behavior that many folks in town have come to expect from our leaders. Meaning some of those at City Hall as well as certain council members. 11/03/06

Eloquently put, Jeff.

You could not have put it more eloquently Mr. Hancock in your October 28th article regarding sour grapes.  I too was a staunch supporter of Representative Moses and was saddened by the results of the primary elections.  Nevertheless, that is what happens when one's arrogance causes his own demise.  Candidate Edgmon actually got out there and campaigned.
Where were you Mr. Moses?

Like you Mr. Hancock, I was literally appalled to see the North Pacific Fisheries Banquet sponsored and paid for by the City turn in to nothing more than a political platform for a "write-in campaign."  What in the hell were
you thinking, Mayor?  But then again, your arrogance is becoming more and more noticable as well. The best case scenario out of all this is that the Republican Party appreciates what you have done for them.  Keep up the good
work!

Moses’ Write-In Campaign Looks Like Sour Grapes

As a resident of Unalaska for the past decade and a half, I have supported Representative Carl Moses every time there has been an opportunity to vote for him.  However, I was saddened and disappointed in his announcement to run a write-in campaign for the District 37 seat after losing fair and square to his opponent, Bryce Edgmon, in the primary election deciding coin toss.  I find it disheartening that our long-time community leader and statesman would display such poor sportsmanship.  I was shocked when his remarks after losing were that the Alaska State Law calling for the coin toss was “unfair to the voters”.  Huh?   I wonder if the flip had gone his way, if he would have then renounced the method as unfair and still called for a runoff election instead?

I was angered by the decision of the City of Unalaska to allow the taxpayer-funded reception for the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council last month to turn into a political announcement and fundraiser for Moses' write-in campaign.  It is one thing to turn the podium over to the ranking politician to fluff-up the event.  It is yet another to notify the press in advance and allow the opportunity to turn into an unethical campaign event.  Those were our tax dollars at work, folks.

I have always found Rep. Moses to be approachable and friendly.  I have enjoyed knowing him and all of his family, and appreciate all of their years of involvement and service to our community and to the region.  Since losing the primary though, I have only heard Rep. Moses refer to Candidate Edgmon in bitter terms as a “Johnny-Come-Lately,” and, if this person thinks he can come in as a newbie and get anything done for the District then he (Edgmon) is in for a surprise.  In contrast, throughout the campaign leading up to the primary election and since, I have heard nothing from Edgmon but respect and admiration for Moses’ years of service to the District.

Representative Moses, why not go out as a mentor to a freshman Representative candidate, rather than as a write-in menace?

If we as a community and you as our leader try so desperately to cling to power today, where will we be the next time the District 37 seat comes up to defend?

Can anyone tell me why write in candidate Moses is getting away with putting his signs up in City public spaces like in front of the Post office and in the City roads right of way?  I thought the City had banned any such campaigning using the City right of way?  Any info on this would be helpful.  Can anyone post signs in the City right of way or is this just being allowed for Mr. Moses?  Maybe it has something to do with his campaign manager working at City Hall.  Posted 10/24/06

Rep Moses write-in campaign can win, but we need your support!!!

Carl Moses’s write-in campaign for the District 37 House seat isn’t being done because he wants to be a spoiler or have a Republican get the seat. It is being done because many of his constituents asked him to do run as a write-in.  Carl lost the election on a coin flip not because he had fewer votes. He has been an effective legislator for our district for 22 years, and he has done a great job for our communities, not just in the Aleutians, Alaska Peninsula, but in the Bristol Bay region as well. Rep Moses is respected on both sides of the aisle in Juneau and has always gotten more than his share of capital project dollars for the district.

With all of the important issues facing this state in the next few year – gas pipeline, education funding, PERs/TERs mining, oil and gas issues – this is one of the most important elections in many years. Now isn’t the time to have a freshman legislator in Juneau who is most likely part of a minority that doesn’t have a chance to get any decent committee assignments.  He certainly won’t be on the finance committee!

Rep, Moses has been a longtime legislator, a small business owner, a fisherman and fishing vessel owner.  Carl knows this district.  He isn’t anti-development, and he won’t be dancing on the stings of anti-development forces that don’t want anything done in the region.  The majority of the residents of this district don’t support the anti-development philosophy. Carl will make the call on projects in our district when all the facts are all in and the permitting process is approved. He knows and understands that the developments of the resources of this region are important to this district, for both employment and the revenues for our communities and villages to survive.

Please join me in providing another amazing upset in District 37 by writing in Carl Moses for House Seat 37 on November 7th 2006.  We need to keep this grassroots effort going!  Get the word out and get the vote out in your community!  Get posters out do a phone bank!  We can do this. Have folks look at sample ballot it isn’t hard – just write in CARL MOSES, and fill in the circle next to his name.
